POPPERS, the swap

Recommended Posts

Flies flew in this morning. It shows me that before I get in another popper swap I'm going to do some serious practice, get some bodies on order besides the foam, and try my hand at the air brush setup we bought for a daughter years ago and she never got into it. Maybe I can make use of it.

Thanx for hosting and thanx all the guys for some great work.

Ok it looks like I do qualify. I'll get the swap up in a day or two. I'm gonna put a little thought into this one.

Got my set in today, and all of them look a lot better than the one I tied. Looks like I need to get in more practice, also. Thanks to all for the great poppers.

Thank you all for the beatifull selection of art. Thought it a fly swap, not art swap. ;-)

Seriously a nice set of poppers, and definitely a lot of inspiration to get from these flies.

And, thank you for hosting this Kevin.

As promised to Kevin, an SBS of my little frog pattern:

The materials:

post-13174-0-19395600-1398544081_thumb.jpg

Hook, thread, Foam for top and bottom and tongue, marker for painting, eyes and glue...

Cut the foam top and bottom according to the prepared shape

post-13174-0-79369800-1398544156_thumb.jpg

Tie in the foam in a place, whew the tip of the head just exceed the hook eye.

post-13174-0-55610900-1398544260_thumb.jpg

Secure the foam with multiple thread turns

post-13174-0-29660400-1398544240_thumb.jpg

Tie in legs with turns of 8, both hind (4 "fibers") and front (2 fibers) legs

post-13174-0-77988600-1398544273_thumb.jpg

Tie in the tongue, that forces the mouth open and the popper effect to take place

post-13174-0-43074500-1398544293_thumb.jpg

Glue top foam, only on the frog body

post-13174-0-28033200-1398544101_thumb.jpg

Place the top on the hook, and place the legs right in the still liquid glue

post-13174-0-05247400-1398544227_thumb.jpg

Glue and place bottom. Press the two half tightly together

post-13174-0-81912200-1398544141_thumb.jpg

Tie off the thread around the neck of the frog. Use glue instead of whip finnish.

post-13174-0-63247000-1398544310_thumb.jpg

Place a tiny droplet of the liquid glue on the knot of the legs. NOT the legs, since glue and stretching of the legs will make ugly things happen to the legs.
Tight the not so the glue is in the knot, and only in the knot.

post-13174-0-96262700-1398544129_thumb.jpg

Use the gel glue to make to droplets where the eyes are supposed to be placed

post-13174-0-90528500-1398544115_thumb.jpg

Place the eyes in the glue and make sure they are secured

post-13174-0-84350000-1398544212_thumb.jpg

Use marker to decorate the fly

post-13174-0-73976300-1398544185_thumb.jpg

Finally when all glue is hardened, cut the legs to the length desired, spray the "fibers" of the legs to form feet.

And cut the tongue to a length that alows tying the leader onto the fly and still keep the mouth open and ready to pop...
