January Flies From the Vise

Playing around with another vintage PNW streamer; tried it with a more traditional tail length but opted for the Irish lough mayfly style.

hook - WFC Model 6 #8
thread - Veevus 8/0 black
tail - bleached pheasant tail dyed red
abdomen - UniStretch Orange
thorax - Prism Dubbing purple
wing - hen badger tips
shoulder - hen badger
head/collar - pronghorn dyed black (1 Tbs Rit Dark Brown/1 cup water overdyed with 1 Tbs Rit Black/1 cup water)

Category - Stonefly Nymph

Hook - Mustad R74-9672 (or equivalent), Size 8-14

Weight - Lead/lead free wire (not specified in the book recipe) (optional)

Thread - Olive

Tail - Brown hackle fibers

Ribbing - Fine gold or copper wire (not specified in the book recipe) (optional)

Body - Peacock herl

Legs - Brown hackle fibers

Wing case - Dyed brown mallard feather trimmed to extend over approximately 1/3 body

Tying Tip - Wrap the herl around a length of tying thread into a herl rope for a little durability.

For additional durability, coat the hook shank with a light coating of super glue prior to wrapping the herl forward.

Tail - 3 brown hairs, divided

Body - Brown saddle hackle stem

Wing case - Natural gray duck/goose quill section

Legs - Brown hackle wrapped through the thorax

Thorax - Peacock herl

Martin Joergensen’s version had a partridge collar but I prefer the markings on the pheasant; doubtful that fish will care one way or another.

thread - Danville 6/0 brown 
rib - small wire gold 
body - dubbing squirrel
wing - Zonker strip squirrel
collar - pheasant rump

Another nymph.    yellow feather barbs for tail, brown and red hair palmered for body. Thin skin wing case. dubbing for thorax, soft hackle feather over thorax.

Tail.      .... Blue dun hen fibres

Body ..   ..  Muskrat dubbed lightly in the rear so thread shows through

Hackle.  ... Blue dun hen cape hackle
