  1. Do you charge for membership to your get- togethers? Just curious if they help with the cost of the pop's , pies, lights, and what-nots.
  2. Well, I don't want to sound like a turkey but, That will take a rather large hook (28/0 ???) you'll have the problem with tying it sparse, It's safe to say that it's ok to go over board here. You could use ruffled grouse feathers to get the mottled effect you need to resemmble the turkey feathers. I'd stick with birch limbs for the legs. You could fill micro panty hose full of cherry tomatoes for the beard. I can't imagine tying a 16# Tom Thumb... Just kidding... good luck, maybe you should ask one of the "realistic" fly tyers... Good score on the feathers. A guy gave me a couple a few years ago, they take forever to sort out and match feathers (which is what you want to do. Package like kinds together. They'll be easier to find). Randy
  3. Very nice job.! you ought to be very proud of your work. Randy
  4. What does a "bucktail Teaser" look like ? If you're using them for Flounders , what size ,model hook are you using? we have alot of flounder fishing around here and you might have something that would be fun for kids to try.
  5. My favorite and most productive Chironomid patterns are those tyed using Liquid Lace. Randy
  6. That would be like Easter egg patterns by the way...
  7. Did You tye up some egg patterns with your new vise? Actually your wife sounds like she could be the lost sister to mine! Now, don't complain about her wanting a percentage of your fly's, just take her out to some snaggy place and I'll guarantee that your materials stash will increase dramatically.
  8. You don't suppose that he wrapped that rod by hand do you? I wonder if he used the rod wrapping machine like the one that the spagetti company demos at the shows.
  9. You can normally pick thos VCR boxes up at your neighborhood Video rental outfit for free. They usually just give them away. I collected many over the years for sending swap fly's out. Randy

I just filled it out also. I was surprised at the lack of women on this site. and the range of years in the fly tying area. very interesting...

  16. Can you post a photo of the wing former? Is it like a wing burner? I haven't seen one that I know of and am curious. Did a search on Ebay but , nothing. Thanks

  18. can you post a picture? I have to teach a fly tying class(es) at the local 4-H super-saturday coming up in Feb. and this might be something good for the 5th graders to do. Thanks
  19. Angora goat is too wispy and soft. real seal fur is a bit "stiff" and not as long as angora. African goat is a much better chioice.Got both and don't like it. The next thing that I would go to is the SLF simply because they have some really nice colors that can be easily blended to get you sealbeugger colors. One of my favorites is Claret, Black, a small touch of red and blend.
  20. You can also substitute it with African Goat although the real thing is always the best...
  21. I use Horse mane (fine) or porcupine guard hairs too. Although I do prefer the horse mane. I tried the rubber legs but found that they're too flimsy when you get them down in the size that is proportioned to your fly. otherwise they tend to be to big for the fly. but, they do add more moovement than horse mane if that's what you're looking for. Experiment and see which you like better.
  22. use a tea candle instead of a lighter, melt the eyes at the bottom of the flame ; not the top pull away from the flame fast and "flick it" with your wrist quickly. No fumes or hazards. I make several hundred at a time this way. Use different color lines, line diameters ,etc. And cut your pieces in small pieces. I like 3/4" because I don't have to melt as much that way. I also use one of those fine tipped Made in India tweezers to hold the mono. I used a 3 corner file to cut 3 groves in the tweezer from the tip. the closer to the tip the narrower and smaller the eyes. works good for me.
