  1. SilverCreek was quick on the draw.
  2. It can be but not always. You can tie an attractor on solo when you hit a stream with no observable hatch activity. You can tie a representative dry fly on with that fly's nymph trailing below, neither would be considered an attractor. . Yes, but just because a fly has flash doesn't make it an attractor.
  3. Plenty of opinions expressed here @ the virtues, or lack thereof, of rotary and true rotary vises. Some find they need it, some find they like it occasionally, some find they never use it. That's why the best advise given here was to try tying on some vises, if possible, and then make an your choice.
  4. That sounds more fun than what I used to do. I'd to go out with my neighbor on his boat on a deep (90+ ft) reservoir. Don't remember now how far down we were trolling. Pretty boring, looking back. You knew right away if you had a salmon or a laker on. The salmon were fun.
  5. Congrats. Give us your opinion after you've tied a few on it.
  6. That is a great looking fly - is the body just floss?
  7. Holy crap, that's huge. I used to fish for them up in the Quabbin, kind of like reeling in an old tire IMO.
  8. Looks good, Steve. Like a little oasis, and a perfect size. I'd set up a hammock and sleep out there. I got about 1/2 an acre I have to contend with, sometimes it can be a little much.
  9. They can be annoying at times, the only drawback I have found with rotary tying.
  10. Not the type of fishing I would enjoy, with spin or fly gear, but congrats to her. She sounds pretty fired up.
  11. Interesting. While I don't always palmer hackle or other material up the body of the fly using the rotary feature, I pretty much use the rotary function in one way or another on every fly I tie: rotating to see the other side, rotating to apply head cement evenly, rotating to tie in material on the under or opposite side of the hook, etc., etc. When I'm winding on a rib of tinsel or wire on a longer fly the rotary function really helps to get the ribbing evenly spaced - does that matter to the fish? Probably not, but it matters to me. Is it necessary or essential? No. Would I miss having it? Without a doubt.
  12. Had to look that reference up. 👍 - let us know how it does.
  13. I think Denduke was on the right track, some kind of water fowl. Not much help, I know.
  14. Dan, I just answered your PM, but wanted to post here also. In my opinion, in that price range, though some may prefer the HMH over the Dyna-King, or visa versa, you won't get a bad vise. Again, in my opinion and in that price range, I would consider a true rotary vise. From my experience, though the inline rotary feature is not essential to tying flies, it has some benefits that you may not miss until you don't have them. I wasn't looking to get a rotary vise and had the same opinion as you, thinking I would not use any of the rotary features. Then I happened to pick up a cheap, inline rotary vise with a bunch of fly tying stuff at a yard sale. Once I started using it, I knew I had to get a better one. I got a Renzetti Traveler, I really like it.
  15. Somedays I travel locally quite a bit, always nice to find a quiet cemetery to have lunch and take a few minutes. I came across this one the other day among the cow fields. From the dated gravestones looks like it was established around 1800. One of the first veterans, born 1750, probably served in the Revolution. No doubt the local veteran group will be putting a new flag in the holder soon for Memorial Day. In Memory of Lieut. Jonas Newell who died April 12, A.D. 1816 Att. 66 Unveil thy bosom, faithful tomb, Take this new treasure to thy trust, And give these sacred relics room To seek a slumber in the dust. In memory of Miss ASENATH FROST Daughter of Mr. Seth & Mrs. Abigail Frost Who died Feb 19, 1810. Aged 18 Yrs. & 6 Ms. She was possessed of sprightly active powers of mind, sound judgement, a uniform temper and disposition. Her exemplary life and high attachment to study demonstrated her virtue and rendered her life important to society. Adieu my friend and kindred dear, For silent dust conceals me here, And when the mighty trump shall sound, to call the nations from the ground, I’ll then reanimate my day & wing my way to join the great celestial day.
  16. One of these days, Steve. I'd love to fish one of your rods.
  17. Thats Lefty Kreh's vise, from The American Museum of Fly Fishing
  18. Agree, why I often put in my own criticism after I post one of my ties, as I sometimes don't see how I could have improved it until after I see it on the big screen. I think they both look good, but agree with your critiques, with the exception of the thinness of the PMD. Nevertheless, I'd still try to catch a tree branch with them.
  19. I like that color blank, looks sweet with those wraps. I never understood rod weights that low, but I'd take that in a 3 or 4 weight, 7' to 8' when you get a chance. Please and thanks.
