mikechell 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2020 The majority of my flies are tied with sewing thread. Polyester sewing thread, not cotton, which will mildew and weaken quite quickly. I don't tie those royals, so I can't comment except to say, it looks as good as many I've seen online.
cphubert 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2020 Landon, you are correct wings are to high for my taste also, and a little less flare on the tail but that is personal preference. As long as it is not cotton thread you'll be ok. Good to see you are your own worse critic, you are progressing along well.

Mark Knapp 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2020 13 hours ago, Landon P said: To me it just doesn't look right. I think it could be the wings, they might be a tad to long. I wouldn't sell these quite yet because I used sewing thread for the abdomen and idk how durable and effective that is. Now we're talking. If you had posted the picture with this statement rather than what you said, we could help. I'd say tie one with lower wings and see which one you like the most. I'm just saying, post the best that you can do. Have appreciation for your own stuff or nobody else will. And ask for help if something doesn't seem right. You're trying to make a business out of this and it doesn't help people decide to buy from you if you post a picture of a pretty good looking fly and say "crappy fly"

Landon P 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2020 Here are my first attempts at size 18 flies. I have never tied any thing smaller that a size 14 until now. I did a Griffiths Gnat variation and a Not so great pheasant tail, but the bluegill will enjoy it
chugbug27 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2020 I've been tying 18's and taking pictures, but not posting... too embarrassed at the results. Here are the few I am okay with. Two views of a BWO parachute, this one with hand dyed hackle stem, #18: Here is the difference between a #18 BWO parachute tied with a commercially dyed peacock quill: and one tied with my own dyed peacock quill: Here's the bug I'm aiming for...
