March Flies From the Vise

Yup, I’ve fished a totally torn up, unrecognisable as to what type of fly it was, and still got bit.  
( it was a klinkhammer to start with, just fuzz and thread when done. )

Tying Ausable Ugly's last week jogged my memory  about this simple fly that did well for me few years back.  Eventually I lost the 2 examples I had and forgot about it .  No official name for this pattern that I'm aware of so I call it my Mean Wolverine.  No pretty, but they catch trout.

DEAN’S MEAN VOLVERINE

HOOK: #12 -#8 2XL STREAMER

THREAD: #70 BLACK

UNDER BODY: WIRE

TAIL: WOLVERINE DARK GUARD HAIRS

ABDOMEN/BODY: WOLVERINE UNDER COAT DUBBING

HACKLE: SPUN WOLVERINE -WRAP FROM HEAD TO TAIL AND BRUSHED OUT.  SECURE AT TAIL WITH RIB.

RIB: RED WIRE

HEAD: BEAD

Walter Colbum of Bangor, Maine, originated the four preceding patterns.

All of the bodies on these patterns should be well tapered into a cigar shape.

Hook - Single salmon
Thread - Black
Tip - Flat silver tinsel
Tail: Golden pheasant crest feather
Ribbing - Oval silver tinsel
Body - Rear half, green floss; the front half, yellow floss
Hackle - Yellow tied on as a collar and tied back and down
Wing - Yellow bucktail tied low over the body, with an overwing of white bucktail. Keep both colors in equal proportions and sparse
Cheeks - Jungle cock eyes or substitute

Crease Fly - Tinker Mackerel 

hook #2/0 saltwater perfect bend wide gap

thread - big fly

tail - arctic fox over flash over buck tail

body - sticky back foam, transfer foil, markers, stick on eye, use CA gel glue (try not to glue fingers)

coating - clear gorilla glue brushed on and dried on turner

this is a Joe Blados pattern. There is a recent Masters on The Fly 2024 video on YouTube that I thought was a great watch. Maybe cause we are a year or two apart.
