  1. It's a bit of an old school material. I recently used golden yellow and red for the body of my Cortaca Jug fly for the Sports Swap. Also, I didn't soak the acetate in the acetone - any more than a 2 second soak and the acetate simply would end up coloring the acetone with none left on the hook! Get a set of cheap, small sized paint brushes from a dollar store and simply just run it over the acetate once. It may look too dry after a few seconds but come back in a minute and the acetate will have softened. Also, it limits the exposure to the acetone for those with breathing issues and ALWAYS have good ventilation! Kim
  2. I'm mostly Mustad though I have bought some TMC, Green Caddis, and JStockard house hooks when I had the need, and they were on sale. I recently had to buy a box of Sprite hooks due to the uniqueness of the size hook needed - 1 XL dry fly for a swap. But about 90+% are Mustad's. I guess I'm old school! Kim
  3. I usually find it near the jackalope dubbing in most fly stores.😉 Kim
  4. Not to pick but the last post on this thread was eight years ago. Just an FYI, not a complaint! I'd NEVER want to stifle anyone that could give advise that I could use! Kim
  5. Sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera! Had a great Cannon about 15 years ago but I went on a trip and on the way home some baggage handler must have needed a last-minute gift for their spouse! But I do hope to see this work. Kim

  11. Welcome to the site! You'll find tht it is loaded with many fine and experienced tyers, fishers, rod builders and just good folk. I'm a born and bred central NYer, USA. I've been tying for over fifty years and hosting fly swaps for going on 12 years now. I hope that we cross paths here in the future. Kim

  14. One hint on "making" your own variegated chenille. If you want a ginger and blue mix you won't find it in any store, you simply take those 2 colors and twist them together then wrap that combo on the hook shank. Oh, and why blue and ginger? It's the color combo I use when tying my Pumpkinseed variation of the James Wood Bucktail. Also you can control the color mix by wrapping the chenille looser/tighter. A way to always have the right "chenille color combo on hand. Kim BY the way, Harry Murray has a lot of fine panfish patterns, in addition to the JWB, that could use your materials.
  15. One question - was the rod in your mouth while you were CATCHING that fish!? That's the size fish I tell stories about long after I caught a 8incher. I always figured that after the years went by the fish must have grown! Nice catch! Kim
  16. When cutting yarn for dubbing, the base material is usually the determining factor.' For example, wool from most sheep is a bit stiffer than wool from, say, an alpaca is softer and limper. Synthetic yarns are usually stiffer and slicker. The rule of thumb is the stiffer and slipperier the material the longer you should cut it. One example I can think of is one of my favorite patterns, the Rackelhannen - it uses polypropylene (poly). Poly is very slick and stiff so you should cut it about 13 MM long at least. Otherwise, it will slip off the noodle dub. Also, if you are mixing your own dub, the shorter that you can cut the material the easier it is to mix. I guess I'm saying thatyou want to find the happy medium! Kim
