  1. STAYNER DUCKTAIL my version with only a slight deviation from the original. I like this pattern so much I tied another variation. I’m excited to fish these. Hook - Mustad size 10 3XL Thread - UTC 70, black Tail - Orange chicken feather fibers Rib - Gold flashabou. 2nd one has a green flashabou rib Body - Med yellow pearl chenille dabbled with a black sharpie. No sharpie on 2nd. Throat - Orange chicken feather fibers Wing - Mallard flank dyed olive Next up is one of my favorite SMB flies, the HYBRID CARP FLY
  2. Let me add myself to the boring unimaginative side of this conversation. I can’t say my favorite spot because it is in the heart of a major metropolis 20 minutes from my back door. There is endless traffic buzzing by, freight trains, commuter trains, smoke stacks, smog, sirens, occasional gunshots and homeless drug addicts sleeping in vehicles at the put in. I’m really not sure why it’s not a destination for others because from a fishing standpoint it can be magical. While I do a fair bit of travel, I have no real yearnings to fish somebody else’s special spot especially when I consider it inferior to what I have in my own backyard. When I retire to my RV I will surely have a rod or two with me but I won’t be traveling for the fishing, I’ll be traveling for the travel. Except when I go to Alaska, I really want to fish Alaska and catch a halibut.
  3. Welcome. Except for a pair of scissors and a bobbin, It looks like you’re ready to go. 15 more bucks worth of tools and you’re ready to start. Its not a difficult process to tie trout flies so jump right in.
  4. The important thing is your still getting out with the wife and enjoying yourselves. Nice trip.
  5. I’ll take a quack at the Stayner Ducktail.
  6. You know I’m as cheap as they come and I break out in hives at the thought of paying 8 bucks for 10 things I can barely see. Buuuuut, as Fin-ite said, tippet rings last forever and I am really mindful to reuse them when necessary. I think I’ve only bought 2 packs of them, each pack a different size, since I’ve been using them. You may have actually been the one to get me to try them.
  7. That’s a two piece rim once popular on military vehicles and implements of husbandry’s. The tires are so thick that they cannot be stretched over a one piece rim with the bead seat part of the rim so the outer bead is a separate ring. There also were 3 piece rims but I never saw one of those. They’re notorious for killing tire changers when being aired up. In the army they use to have these massively strong racks the tires would be rolled in when being aired up. The racks were strong enough to prevent the ring and tire from killing you in the event the ring was incorrectly installed.
  8. A short but good life for an axle. Saltwater is a bitch on equipment.
  9. Cheap tippet rings have flat surfaces and have a shape of a washer, like the ones pictured. The cross section of a good tippet ring is round with no flat surfaces. As much as I hate spending 8 bucks on 10 tippet rings it’s the price that has to be paid for a properly shaped ring.
  10. Glad everybody was OK and that you had no additional property damage. How often do you replace your axle? They are cheap enough that replacing them every 4 or 5 years should be considered normal routine maintenance. Especially considering the amount of salt water dunking you do.
  11. To me being in a man cave sounds to much like being in a sausage factory. My entire house is my home so I don’t have a separate man cave but I would guess a mans cave is determined by where the wife says it is.
  12. I’m with everybody else. Lavender for sure.
  13. You’re sweating the small stuff. Whip finishing, palmering hackle, wrapping pheasant tail and most other “techniques” have a zero learning curve and there is absolutely no reason to start with sewing thread. Most problems with starting out is in proportions, crowding the eye and too many thread wraps. I agree just start tying flies. It’s not that difficult to tie fishing flies. You will waste some material but that’s fly tying. I’m sure the fish will be proud of your first attempts. Good luck and enjoy!
  14. Those are some seriously large bass. Nice going.
  15. MOOOOOOOOOOO MOOOOOO MOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I don’t know how to spell the noises moose make but this is close enough. Tough to get with a fly rod but hang in there and you’ll get one.
  16. I’ve got to agree with you. I am by no means against the legal hunting of game but the hero shot makes me want to puke. It’s not only disrespectful and callous but it’s great fodder for the anti hunting crowd to use against the mature hunters amongst us. A little maturity is in order. I for one would never do business with a company that markets themselves in this manner.
  17. I was waiting to comment on the copper color until the gun was complete. I gotta say I wasn’t wild about the copper on the lower but seeing the complete build, I like the copper a lot. It really looks good. Nice vision.
  18. Come to think of it, I think there was an old thread here. Maybe I did read about it before. That’s a benefit of getting old you get to learn things twice.
  19. Thumbs up on the Tups and the history. I had no idea it used scrotum fur. I would have definitely went with a substitution myself.
  20. Nancy’s prayer caddis Hook - Standard dry fly size 16 Thread - 12/0 Veevus, gray Shuck - White polypro Body - Natural squirrel dubbing Wing - Wood duck breast feathers (2) Thorax/head - Natural squirrel dubbing The dubbing is loose and can be brushed out for a buggier look. I like it trimmed a bit. NEXT FLY - TUPS INDISPENSABLE, DRY FLY.
  21. I’ll take the Nancy’s prayer caddis.
  22. I’d rather keep the money. I say that about every vise that costs over 300 bucks but it really applies to this vise. What does somebody have against money that they would willingly trade it for that thing?
  23. Tough question! My top three: 1) Shawn Holsinger, Holsingers fly shop. Salt of the earth PA guy, ties flies to fish and has a rocking beard. 2) Tim Flagler, tightline videos. No nonsense 3) The feather bender. I find him soothing. I concur, Kelly Galloup is way way way too wordy. Can’t watch him at all. question- who is Matt Savage? Matt O’Neil from Savage flies? SELF EDIT - after reading replies posted at the same time as mine , I guess he is one and the same.
  24. Recipes/patterns are simply a guideline. I only care if something I tie catches fish not if some fly tier somewhere thinks I tied a fly correctly according to how someone else tied it. The actual material or if I tied it with an exact hook gap length hackle does not cause me to lose sleep. It’s all just guidelines.
